Applications\XBMC

XBMC is a better built media centre than Mythbuntu. To install it, use the following procedure.

First, confirm that the prerequisites are installed:

$ sudo apt-get install python-software-properties pkg-config

Now try:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:team-xbmc

If this does not work, it may be because the Ubuntu keyserver is down (again) so add a new key:

$ sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver pool.sks-keyservers.net 0x6d975c4791e7ee5e

And add the following two lines to /etc/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu lucid main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

Whether you had to add the new keyserver or not, you can now install XBMC as follows:

$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install xbmc xbmc-standalone

This is probably completely irrelevant but if you discover that XBMC cannot override the screensaver, you have to write a script to disable the screensaver whilst XBMC is running.

$ sudo gedit /home/wp/xbmc.sh

Add the following text.

#!/bin/sh #Disable Screensaver gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled --type bool FALSE #Disable PowerManager gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-powermanager/idle_activation_enabled --type bool FALSE # Start XBMC xbmc # Enable ScreenSaver when XBMC closes gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/idle_activation_enabled --type bool TRUE # Enable PowerManager when XBMC closes gconftool-2 --set /apps/gnome-powermanager/idle_activation_enabled --type bool TRUE

Now we have to set the script to be executed by everyone.

$ sudo chmod 555 /home/wp/xbmc.sh

Now create a launcher to the script on your desktop and bob is your uncle.
